The Wait Is Over ... Supergirl Airs Tonight!

 The wait is over!!!!

It has been over a year since the news first broke that there would be a Supergirl show.

Since that announcement, we have lived through casting guesses, teases of villains, promos, commercials, and a social media barrage.

We also learned the premiere would be in October, not September, adding one more month of torturous waiting.

I never thought it would be possible ... but tonight at 8:30 we'll all be watching a live action Supergirl show.

But perhaps the best thing about this has been the realization that this show is going to be great.

It starts with the star and everything I have seen and heard from Melissa Benoist has made me, as a Supergirl fan, thrilled. She simply is Supergirl. She exudes all the complexity of Kara, the optimism, the energy, the insecurities, the power ... she is Supergirl!

Look at this picture from TV Guide. That is Supergirl!

But the way producers Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler, writer Andrew Kreisberg, director Glen Winter, the co-stars ... everyone who has touched this show ... everyone has gushed about the spirit and energy of this show.

I'll try to do my review by the middle of the week. But maybe I'll try to live tweet tonight.

The wait is over!

Totally with you Anj on the enthusiasm for tonight... can't wait, counting down to the airing!
And to the rest of us other Supergirl fans here, will be watching with you in spirit!
And someone pinch me... has it been a year already since the news that the Girl Of Steel would
be gracing the small screen was announced?

I'm watching with excitement and trepidation. I do not like it all that they're not pronouncing her name right nor that she's a gender bent Clark Kent with Toyman as her best friend. But, I know this will probably be "it" for Supergirl if it doesn't succeed, so I will support it any way I can. I'm still in shock I'm hearing "Supergirl" on TV. Who would have thought 30 years ago there's even be a cousin of Superman portrayed on anything ever again!

In fairness, Kara Danvers is basically Linda Lang (and Linda Lee Danvers herself had a stint where she was a reporter). Also, to put our fears to rest, apparently Kara's friend is Winslow Schott Jr., son of the actual Toyman, Winslow Schott Sr. (who was cast recently).

Its been thirty one years since Helen Slater and a almost a decade since Vandervoort so a lot is riding on tonight's show, a lot. I'm excited but I've got trepidations a'la Uncle Screensaver....At the very least though, this is for me, a final and irrevocable repudiation of COIE #7 and all it's evil works.
Fingers crossed....

My fears lie in the oft misconception that Kara Zor-El is a carbon copy of Superman, simply "Superman in a skirt." Pre-COIE, "Clark Kent" was the bumbling, awkward, even coward persona Kal-El used while Linda Lee Danvers was very much the "real" Kara Zor-El, with "Supergirl" her "Clark Kent." Kara hid behind a wig, and kept her powers and identity secret but the only thing she may have really pretended was the whole eating and drinking thing (see the diet soda in Linda's fridge). While "she" kept the wig in Superman: TAS, she also got the glasses and became a bit more wallflowery - though she didn't take a fake first name. Since then, Supergirl's secret identity has become almost identical to "Clark Kent," more held back in personality and only glasses.

With "Supergirl" we have Kara Danvers almost identical to what the gen pop knows as Clark Kent. Even Benoist says she has a slouch. While I realize that this may be the modern "Linda Lee Danvers," and that what I remember of Supergirl hasn't been around for 30 years, I'm just concerned that there will be judgement on the character in the show because people will just view her as that carbon copy we know she's not.

As for her name, I can't stand hearing it as "Carra" in the movie and it's going to be tough to listen to it in the show. I'm not sure where they got the idea that it's pronounced that because no other time in the media except in the movie was it pronounced that. In fact, in a letter page in Supergirl's second series (which I have to look for) the editor even clarified that fact.

I have other concerns but those are the ones bugging me the most right now. However, despite that, I agree with JF on the show with regards to Crisis #7. While Convergence was questionable at best but with Kara surviving (hey, she may have made the sacrifice but was able to be brought back to life) and this TV series in particular, there's some justice now to what was done 30 years ago. To those at DC who saw her as superfluous and not just super, well, this kind of kicks them in the butt. :P

Everyone - My suggestion is to watch the show and promote it as much as you can. Be like Supergirl, optimistic and powerful. You have more power in influencing the public than you realize.

My qualms are purely existential I've been to the Mountain Top with Supergirl so many times only to have the Promised Land Cruelly Denied. But Hope Springeth Enternal "Tomorrow Belongs to She" and like that....And in about thirty minutes, The Adventure Begins AGAIN!

TV Line reports that the premier/pilot episode of Supergirl is the #1 drama premier this fall.

http://tvline.com/2015/10/27/supergirl-premiere-ratings-cbs/

"CBS’ Supergirl took flight on Monday night with 12.9 million total viewers and a 3.2 rating leading out of The Big Bang Theory — ..."

one pair of eyeballs were mine....

I think it is fair to say that I have been waiting for a Supergirl TV series since 1959.

My Supergirl would be Linda Lee with a pig-tail wig in an orphanage, having been dumped there by Superjerk...

Hey, they did say "Superman" once during the pilot episode.

Overall, a good pilot. It kind of felt rushed to me... it would have been nice to have a 90-minute or 2-hour pilot. Given how Alex is a new character, the couple of references about her past jealousy of Kara and how she was accepted into the DEO are kind of confusing.

As an aside, it'll take me a little while to get used to the lower levels of super-strength and invulnerability (especially since I've been re-reading some Silver and Bronze Age stories). Kryptonite as a "rare" counter against completely indestructible planet throwers was perhaps understandable, but it seems almost like piling on now.
